As it has been in previous years, there was a nice mix of work and a decent crowd. This is the same park where several other art & craft events take place throughout the year and with it's central location in the Winter Haven area, it's easy to get to and offer lots of parking. Even at times when I've seen the park absolutely packed with shoppers and exhibitors there are still plenty of places to park and all that parking is free! That is a real draw for shoppers because it always irks me to see shoppers dropping $10 or $15 to some parking lot parasite before they even get into the show! It's all money out of the pockets of exhibitors. Christy Hemenway has been heading up this event for a good many years and all that experience has really paid off! The load in is easy, the organization is great the placement of artists on the show grounds couldn't be better and the show is well juried offering work that will sell in the local area. I've seen other shows that claim to be some sort of artistic triumph, but then all the artists go away empty handed. Christy certainly has an eye for good art... but just as importantly she has an eye for what will sell in her community. I think she does a great job of not only having attractive, quality work in the show... but also in selecting work that is appropriate for the area. In any case, most exhibitors I talked to agreed and sales were pretty much what everyone expected for the show. During the time I was at the show it was never so packed that you couldn't get into the booths... but there were always people in just about every booth and exhibitors didn't have time to carry on a 30 minute conversation with me so you know they were selling! The Central Park Art Festival is definitely worth considering for your schedule next year. It's really a combination of fine art and fine craft and although I doubt if you'll sell any $10,000 paintings or sculptures, you should expect reasonable sales of moderately priced work. This show is a good value and most exhibitors I talked to had done the show in previous year and had plans on coming back in 2014... in my book that's the best way to judge a show! ------------------------------------------------------------------- Central Park Art Festival - 34th Annual Winter Haven, FL March 17 & 18, 2012 Christy Hemenway Ridge Art Association Just as the craft shows abound in the fall... it seems that art shows are everywhere in the spring. So if you're a fine artist, picking decent shows can be a challenge. Complicating things even further are the challenges the economy has presented... particularly in the field of fine arts where purchases typically are higher than with craft shows. The art shows in Central Florida are definitely seeing a resurgence in both attendance and buyers and this show at Winter Haven are following that trend. As I walked through the show and talked to exhibitors most of them told me that sales had been decent and even a few of the more expensive pieces had left the show destined for homes in the Winter Haven area. Although the show does attract shoppers from several other areas in the state, my casual observation is that probably 95% of the shoppers come from towns within a 40 to 50mile radius. There seems to be a fair loyalty for locals too as most exhibitors told me they see quite a few of the same customers each year they participate in the event. Of course the only way they would know that is if they have attended the show in the past and my guess is that probably 50% of the exhibitors had done the show in the past. The "loyal customer base is a mixed blessing. On one hand if you have customers that really like your work and buy from you on a regular basis then great. But you have to also keep a close eye on the evidence of declining sales as you may have saturated the area. Personally I think it's important to hit this kind of a show for a couple of years and then rotate to something else for a year or two then come back again. By doing that you shouldn't burn out the local buyers and they are more motivated to buy something they like because you may or may not be back the following year. It was a pleasure visiting with everyone at the show... all I've got to say is "Thank Goodness." It's about time we started seeing some good sales at shows again! With sales picking up at the events I'd start making plans a little earlier because chances are booth space will start selling out earlier too. The is especially true if you work in one of the more competitive fields like jewelry. The deadline for the event is usually toward the end of January. Although I'm sure some applications come in just as soon as the event's dates are announced for the upcoming year... I'd suggest trying to make up your mind as early as possible to make sure you get your name in the hat right away. This is a decent show with good sales and a great location. Make sure to give it some consideration when you make your spring 2013 schedule!
	St. Augustine Lions Seafood Festival - 43rd Annual St. Augustine, FL - Francis Field Show Dates: 3/21/2026 to 3/22/2026 www.facebook.com/events/1179191196789777/?ref=newsfeed St. Augustine Seafood Festival St. Augustine, FL March 16-18, 2018 It takes a lot to make a festival in St. Augustine a success. Over the years I've certainly seen a lot of failures there. I've tried to think about why that is the case... but I guess it makes sense. Although the place is generally packed on almost any weekend, a significant number of those people are really there for the historic town and all its attractions. They are tourists from out of town who will certainly walk through any show... but they rarely buy. Then you compound that problem with the competition any show gets from the hundreds of gift shops in the area... they are there 365 days a year and those that have survived have certainly figured out how to get all those tourists to part with their money! Fortunately for every exhibitor who plunks down their money to be a part of the Lions Club Seafood Festival... after 31 years, this group of hard working individuals have figured out just exactly the perfect formula for success. Like the local art league who also sponsors a successful local show here, I believe it takes a specific knowledge of the local market for a show here to be very successful. There are a few sponsors who have had some success, but the main shows that seems to attract tons of shoppers and plenty of buyers continue to be those put on by the Lions and the St. Augustine art league. I've attended this show as both an exhibitor and as the publisher of "Where The Shows Are!!!" And I've seen it grow from a relatively small event that took place in the courtyard in the middle of town... to the special events field where it currently resides. During that time the show has continued to grow in both participation and attendance from local shoppers. The quality of work you'll see at the event has grown right along with the show. You'll find everything from quality crafts to great looking fine art. And since the show always gets plenty of applications for the 120 spaces available... you can bet that the committee doing the selection pays close attention to make sure there is not too much of any one type of work. We go to a lot of shows... but it seems I always see a few unique things here that I just don't see anywhere else. What sells here? Well there is always a nice selection of some decent crafts along with mid-level priced art. It used to be primarily a craft show years ago... but that has changed especially over the last six or seven years. Today I'd say the mix is about 50/50 with regards to the crafts vs. art. I've even seen a few pricier pieces of art for sale the last couple of years. We don't see a lot of the traveling type of artists or crafters although you will find some from quite a distance occasionally. More likely you'll find people who live within about a 150 mile type radius. But where every they originate, whether it's art or craft, the work you'll find is definitely the nicer things. You won't find a bunch of buy/ sell or flea market stuff here. If you do... it's because someone pulled the wool over the committee's eyes and you can bet they won't be invited back next year. S ales here have never been reported as â€œstunningâ€ by anyone Iâ€™ve met... but they are almost always reported as decent. It seems that almost everyone sells plenty to justify participating and since a strong number of exhibitors return each year that alone gives you an indication the show is well worthwhile participating in. There are no awards given... so you know that the returns are based on sales. I know Iâ€™ve been to plenty of art shows where the sales are dismal, but the prospect of winning a substantial award keeps exhibitors coming back for at least a few years. Thatâ€™s good... but good sales are even better. The Lions leadership knows that and they do everything they can to bring out the buyers... and they do! Another reason I think this show does well is the consistent leadership. Over at the least the 20 or so years Iâ€™ve been publishing information about this event there have been two men who have guided the club along the road to successful promotion. Bob Vermouth back in the 90's and then Dominic Mercurio over the last 10 years or so. Actually I may have the numbers off a bit because I'm just giving estimates... but I do know that when I first participated in the event back in about 1990, Bob was the guy running just about everything. In any case, although it does take a whole team to pull off anything of this magnitude... these two men clearly have the recipe for success in St. Augustine and luckily they share that knowledge with the Lions... and of course all the artists and craftsmen benefit too! When you're setting up your spring schedule, you owe it to yourself to put this one on the list. A reasonable entry fee, good location, professional sponsorship and decent sales all team up to provide a nice show.
	Spring Garden Festival - 32nd Annual Gainesville, FL - Kanapaha Botanical Gardens Show Dates: 3/21/2026 to 3/22/2026 www.kanapaha.org This is Gainesville's premier horticultural event. The Spring Garden Festival features over 100 booths offering plants, landscape displays, garden accessories, arts and crafts, educational exhibits and, of course, foods. Also featured are live entertainment on Sunday. The children's area is included with the admission price. Pets are not allowed at these festivals. No solicitors allowed.
